Jakob Herzog est un écrivain autrichien né à Misslitz, en Moravie, le 17 juin 1842, formé à Brünn, Vienne et Graz. Secrétaire de la communauté juive de Vienne pendant près de deux ans, il dirige à partir de 1870 la Montags-Revue de Vienne, fondée avec Michael Klapp, et se fait connaître comme auteur dramatique avec des pièces telles que Fischer von Helgoland (théâtre allemand de Prague, 1888), Die Rose (Burgtheater de Vienne, 1891) et Kaufmann aus Tyrol (1893).
