Leo Herzberg-Fränkel est un écrivain autrichien né à Brody, en Galicie, le 19 septembre 1827. Après un séjour d'un an en Bessarabie à dix-sept ans, il publie Bilder aus Russland und Bessarabien et collabore au Jahrbuch für Israeliten de Wertheimer, puis rejoint Vienne après la révolution de 1848, où il travaille pour l'Humorist de Saphir puis pour l'Oesterreichischer Lloyd, avant de devenir l'un des rédacteurs de la Reichszeitung ; en 1856, il est nommé chef de bureau de la chambre de commerce et d'industrie de Brody, poste qu'il occupe pendant quarante ans. Parmi ses principales publications figurent Polnische Juden (1866), traduit en français, en polonais, en russe et en hébreu.
