Herz, Cornelius

Cornelius Herz est un électricien français né à Besançon en 1848 et mort à Bournemouth, en Angleterre, le 6 juillet 1898, fils d'immigrants allemands. Après des études de médecine en Allemagne, il s'installe à Paris puis sert dans l'armée de la Loire pendant la guerre franco-prussienne de 1870 ; il émigre ensuite aux États-Unis, se fait naturaliser et fonde une entreprise d'électricité à San Francisco, avant de revenir à Paris en 1877 pour développer des affaires d'éclairage électrique, ce qui lui vaut d'être fait grand officier de la Légion d'honneur en 1880. Impliqué dans le scandale du canal de Panama, il fuit en Italie puis en Allemagne avant de trouver refuge en Angleterre.
