Salomon Herschell est le grand rabbin des ashkénazes d'Angleterre, né à Londres en 1762, du temps du rabbinat de son père R. Hirsch Lévin, et mort dans cette ville le 31 octobre 1842. Emmené tout enfant par son père en Allemagne lorsque celui-ci quitte le rabbinat anglais en 1764 pour Halberstadt, il y est formé en théologie juive et en mathématiques, exerce son premier ministère à Prenzlau en Prusse, puis devient en 1802 grand rabbin de la Grande Synagogue de Londres, dont l'autorité s'étend bientôt sur l'ensemble des ashkénazes d'Angleterre, fondant notamment le Neveh Ẓedeḳ et la Jews' Free School.
