German-Jewish novelist and editor, a leading figure of the New Objectivity literary movement. Born in Pidvolochysk (Austro-Hungarian Empire) to a Jewish merchant family, he fled Germany in 1933, worked for the Amsterdam publisher Allert de Lange helping banned and exiled writers, then emigrated to New York in 1940.
