American mathematician and statistician born July 1, 1923, son of Pauline and Max Chernoff, Jewish immigrants from the Russian Empire. Doctorate in 1948 under Abraham Wald. Professor at Illinois, Stanford, MIT, and Harvard. He gave his name to the "Chernoff bound" and to "Chernoff faces" (graphic representation of multidimensional data). Member of the National Academy of Sciences (1980).
