Johann Gottfried von Herder est un théologien protestant, poète et écrivain allemand né à Mohrungen, en Prusse orientale, le 25 août 1744, et mort à Weimar le 21 décembre 1803, formé en théologie et en lettres à Königsberg. Prédicateur de cour à Riga à partir de 1764 puis à Bückeburg à partir de 1771, il devient en 1776 prédicateur de cour puis président du consistoire de Weimar jusqu'à sa mort. Ses travaux sur la poésie hébraïque exercent une influence considérable : il publie en 1774 Die Älteste Urkunde des Menschengeschlechts, en 1778 Lieder der Liebe sur le Cantique des cantiques, puis en 1782 son œuvre majeure, Vom Geiste der Ebräischen Poesie.
