Physicien germano-britannique issu « d'une ancienne famille juive » de Rexingen. Doctorat sous Sommerfeld à Munich (1930) ; fuyant l'antisémitisme nazi, il passe par l'URSS (Leningrad) puis se réfugie en Angleterre en 1935. Professeur de physique théorique à Liverpool, il laisse son nom au « polaron de Fröhlich » et au « hamiltonien de Fröhlich » (supraconductivité, physique du solide).
