PhD under Sommerfeld in Munich (1930); fleeing Nazi antisemitism, he passed through the USSR (Leningrad) then took refuge in England in 1935. Professor of theoretical physics at Liverpool, he left his name to the "Fröhlich polaron" and the "Fröhlich Hamiltonian" (superconductivity, solid-state physics).
