Georg Henschel est un compositeur et baryton allemand né le 18 février 1850 à Breslau, formé auprès de Wandelt et Schäffer puis, à partir de 1867, au Conservatoire de Leipzig sous Wenzel et Moscheles. Il s'installe en 1877 en Angleterre, devient en 1881 chef de l'Orchestre symphonique de Boston jusqu'en 1884, s'établit définitivement à Londres en 1885, où il fonde les London Symphony Concerts, et enseigne le chant de 1886 à 1888 au Royal College of Music. Parmi ses œuvres figurent l'oratorio Stabat Mater, créé au festival de Birmingham en 1894, et l'opéra Nubia, créé à Dresde en 1899.
