Descendant of a Frankfurt Jewish family established in London in the early 19th century (grandson, through his mother, of Mayer Amschel Rothschild). Lawyer (Inner Temple, 1863), Conservative MP, Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies (1888–1892). Long active in the Jewish community as president of the Anglo-Jewish Association (1872–1886), fellow of the Royal Society. He subsequently converted to Christianity after the Christian marriage of his daughter.
