Born in Oran (French Algeria) to Jewish parents — Jewish father born in Oran, German Jewish mother from Osnabrück. Co-founder in 1969 of the University Centre of Vincennes (University Paris VIII) where she created the first centre for feminist studies at a European university. Theorist of « feminine writing », she won the Médicis Prize as early as 1969 for her first narrative Dedans, and has published more than seventy books (theatre, theory, poetic fiction).
