Michael Heilprin est un érudit, auteur et philanthrope polono-américain né à Piotrków, en Pologne russe, le 23 février 1823, et mort à Summit, dans le New Jersey, le 10 mai 1888, fils de Phinehas Mendel Heilprin. Marié jeune, il émigre en Hongrie en 1843, où ses écrits en faveur de la liberté attirent l'attention durant les années agitées de 1848 et 1849 et lui valent la connaissance de Kossuth ; après l'échec de la révolution, il passe par Cracovie puis la France, avant de revenir en Hongrie fin 1850. Il émigre aux États-Unis en 1856 sur les conseils de Kossuth, enseigne à Philadelphie, puis devient en 1858 collaborateur de la New American Cyclopædia de Ripley et Dana.
