Né à Constantinople, il fut nommé rabbin de Tira (près d'Izmir) en 1644 puis grand rabbin de Smyrne (1655), où il joua un rôle de premier plan dans l'épisode de Shabbetaï Tsevi. Son œuvre halakhique, la Knesset ha-Gedolah, fut reconnue comme une autorité de référence par les rabbins séfarades et ashkénazes.
