Pionnier de l'imprimerie hébraïque : membre du premier atelier de Prague dès 1514, il devint imprimeur itinérant après avoir dû quitter Prague en 1527. Il produisit des ouvrages de qualité à Augsbourg (1533–1540), aidé de son fils Isaac et de son gendre Joseph b. Yakar, puis à Ichenhausen, Heddernheim et Lublin. « Shahor » (noir) traduit l'allemand « Schwarz ». De sa famille descendirent des générations d'imprimeurs (Prague, Cracovie, Lublin) : sa petite-fille épousa l'imprimeur Kalonymus Jaffe.
