Born Frumstein in Harbin, emigrated to Mandatory Palestine, doctorate in 1954, he studied Assyriology at the Oriental Institute of Chicago under Benno Landsberger. In 1965 he founded and directed the first department of Assyriology at the Hebrew University. Specialist in Neo-Assyrian royal inscriptions and biblical chronology, he was an authority for more than 50 years.
