Moritz Hartmann est un poète autrichien né à Příbram, en Bohême, en octobre 1821, et mort à Oberdöbling, près de Vienne, le 13 mai 1872. Après des études à Prague et à Vienne, il s'établit à Vienne en 1842, revient à Prague en 1847, participe à la révolution de 1848 comme député au Parlement de Francfort, puis, la révolution de Bade ayant échoué en 1849, doit fuir l'Allemagne. Correspondant de guerre en Crimée en 1853 pour la Kölnische Zeitung, expulsé de Constantinople en 1854, il s'installe à Genève en 1860, dirige la Freya à Stuttgart à partir de 1862 puis rejoint en 1868 la Neue Freie Presse à Vienne. Ses œuvres complètes paraissent en dix volumes à Stuttgart à partir de 1873.
