Anton Theodor Hartmann est un auteur allemand né à Düsseldorf le 25 juin 1774 et mort à Rostock le 20 avril 1838. Orienté par Eichhorn vers l'étude de l'Ancien Testament et des langues orientales, il est appelé en 1811 comme professeur de théologie de l'Ancien Testament à Rostock. Son ouvrage principal, publié en 1831, développe la théorie dite « des fragments » sur la formation du Pentateuque ; vers 1835, il publie aussi plusieurs pamphlets contre l'émancipation des Juifs, auxquels Gotthold Salomon répond.
