Henry John Hart est un magistrat australien né à New York le 7 mai 1820 et mort en 1884, formé au Columbia College, parti pour Sydney en 1839 puis établi à Melbourne en 1841. Commissaire de la cour suprême en 1854, il est nommé magistrat territorial en 1857 et élu à plusieurs reprises vérificateur des comptes de Melbourne. Il siège longuement au conseil d'administration de l'hôpital de Melbourne, devient consul par intérim des États-Unis en 1866 puis vice-consul d'Italie, et compte parmi les commissaires royaux de l'Exposition internationale de Melbourne en 1881.
