Albert Harkavy (Abraham Yakovlevitch) est un orientaliste et historien russe né à Novogroudok, dans le gouvernement de Minsk, le 27 octobre 1839, fils d'un riche marchand talmudiste. Formé à l'école rabbinique de Wilna à partir de 1858, il entre en 1863 à l'université de Saint-Pétersbourg, où il obtient en 1868 sa maîtrise d'histoire, puis soutient en 1872 son doctorat sur les origines des Sémites. Il devient en 1877 bibliothécaire de la Bibliothèque impériale de Saint-Pétersbourg, poste qu'il occupe encore en 1903.
