Oscar Hammerstein est un imprésario américain né à Berlin le 8 mai 1848, émigré en Amérique en mars 1863 et installé à New York, où il travaille d'abord dans la fabrication de cigares avant de devenir rédacteur du United States Tobacco Journal. Entré en 1883 dans le théâtre comme directeur du Thalia Theater, il construit et dirige de nombreuses salles new-yorkaises, dont le Manhattan Opera House, et compose plusieurs œuvres musicales, dont The Kohinor (1894) et Sweet Marie (1901).

Directeur de théâtre américain ; né à Berlin le 8 mai 1848, où il a reçu son éducation. En mars 1863, il émigra en Amérique et s'établit à New York, où il se lança dans la fabrication de cigares. Se tournant vers le journalisme, il devint éditeur de la « United States Tobacco Journal » ; il inventa également une machinerie pour la fabrication de cigares qui, sous certains aspects, révolutionna l'industrie. En 1883, Hammerstein entra dans le domaine théâtral en tant que directeur de l'ancien Thalia Theater, devenant ensuite associé à Neuendorff dans la direction du Germania Theater. Hammerstein construisit et dirigea ultérieurement les théâtres suivants à New York : Harlem Opera House ; Harlem Music Hall ; Columbus Theater ; Manhattan Opera House ; The Olympia ; Criterion Theater ; Victoria Theater ; et Belasco Theater ; il construit actuellement (1903) le Drury Lane Theater. Hammerstein a écrit un nombre de productions musicales, dont certaines ont obtenu une grande popularité. Parmi les plus importantes de celles-ci figurent : « The Kohinor », une comédie musicale (1894) ; « Margarite », un ballet-opéra (1895) ; « War Bubbles », une comédie musicale (1896) ; « Santa Maria », un opéra (1896) ; et « Sweet Marie », un opéra (1901).
