Savant babylonien de la quatrième génération amoraïque, contemporain de Papa et successeur de Naḥman b. Isaac à la tête de l'académie de Poumbedita, de 356 à 377. Venu de Nehardea, il y était connu comme « l'amora de Nehardea » ; comme recteur, de nombreux cas indécis lui étaient soumis, et ses décisions furent approuvées par les générations suivantes comme faisant loi, à l'exception notable d'une question du roi Shabour sur la sépulture des morts, à laquelle il ne sut répondre. Il gagnait sa vie par le « ṭarsha », en vendant à crédit des marchandises à des revendeurs tout en assumant les risques du transport.
