Né à Essaouira, il devint le grand historien de la culture juive en terre d'Islam, en particulier au Maroc. Auteur d'une quinzaine d'ouvrages et de plus de 150 articles (pédagogie juive, taqqanot et responsa, kabbale), membre correspondant de l'Académie du Royaume du Maroc. Ses travaux ont fondé l'étude savante de mille (puis deux mille) ans de vie juive au Maroc.
