Haeem (Hayyim) Samuel Kehimkar

Born in Alibag on the Konkan coast, civil servant in Bombay. He founded in 1853 the Bombay Bene Israel Benevolent Society and, in 1875 with his brothers, a school teaching Marathi and Hebrew. He left at his death a manuscript, The History of the Bene-Israel of India (written in 1897), the first history of the community written by one of its own, published in Tel-Aviv in 1937 at the initiative of Immanuel Olsvanger.
