Born Leyvik Halpern near Ihumen (Igumen), he adopted the pen name "Leivick" (derived from his first name Leyvi) to avoid confusion with the poet Moyshe-Leyb Halpern. Bund activist, sentenced to hard labor and exile in Siberia, he escaped and emigrated to the United States in 1913. He became one of the greatest Yiddish poets, famous for his dramatic poem Der Goylem (The Golem, 1921).
