Samuel Guttmann est un gynécologue et auteur médical allemand né à Ostrowo, en Prusse, en 1839, et mort à Berlin le 22 décembre 1893, docteur en médecine de l'université de Berlin en 1864. Installé d'abord à Drebkau en 1866 puis à Berlin, où il se spécialise en gynécologie, il collabore à plusieurs revues médicales et succède en 1885, à la mort de Paul Albrecht Boerner, à la rédaction de la Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift, tout en dirigeant le Reichsmedizinal-Kalender.
