Ludwig Gumplowicz est un historien et juriste chrétien né à Cracovie le 9 mars 1838, formé aux universités de Cracovie et de Vienne, où il exerce d'abord le droit. Nommé docent en 1876, professeur assistant en 1882 puis professeur en 1893 à l'université de Graz, il publie notamment un ouvrage sur la législation polonaise à l'égard des Juifs, où il distingue trois périodes de l'histoire de la Pologne selon l'équilibre changeant entre la couronne, la noblesse et le clergé.
