Meyer Guggenheim est un négociant et magnat des mines américain né à Langenau, en Suisse, en 1828, émigré avec son père à Philadelphie en 1847, où il débute comme colporteur avant de bâtir, par l'importation de broderies suisses puis l'exploitation minière et la fonderie, l'une des plus grandes entreprises de traitement des métaux au monde. Il transfère son affaire à New York en 1881 sous le nom de M. Guggenheim's Sons et construit en 1888 une fonderie à Pueblo, dans le Colorado, avant que son groupe n'entre en 1900 dans la formation de l'American Smelting and Refining Company.
