Charles Gross est un historien américain né à Troy, dans l'État de New York, le 10 février 1857, formé à Williams College puis aux universités de Paris, Berlin et Göttingen, où il obtient son doctorat. Professeur d'histoire à Harvard depuis 1888, il publie notamment Gild Merchant (1890), Bibliography of British Municipal History (1897) et Sources and Literature of English History (1900), et donne en 1887 à l'Anglo-Jewish Exhibition une conférence sur l'Échiquier des Juifs en Angleterre au Moyen Âge. Il traduit également en anglais le Christophe Colomb de Kayserling (New York, 1893) et est vice-président de l'American Jewish Historical Society.

Auteur américain ; né à Troy, N.Y., le 10 février 1857 ; formé à la Troy High School ; au Williams College, dont il a reçu le diplôme de M.A. ; et aux universités de Paris, Berlin et Göttingen, recevant de cette dernière le diplôme de Ph.D. pour son étude sur la « Gilda Mercatoria ». Il est également M.A. honoraire de Harvard, université dans laquelle il a occupé une chaire d'histoire depuis 1888. Gross a démontré une grande originalité et une grande assiduité en tant qu'investigateur en histoire médiévale et anglaise, domaine dans lequel il a écrit les ouvrages suivants : « Gild Merchant », 2 vol., 1890 ; « Select Cases from the Coroners' Rolls », 1896 (pour la Selden Society) ; « Bibliography of British Municipal History », 1897 ; « Sources and Literature of English History », 1900 ; « The Early History of the Ballot in England », dans « Political Science Quarterly », 1898 ; « Modes of Trial in the Medieval Boroughs of England » (Harvard Law Series, mai 1902). Gross a donné une conférence à l'Anglo-Jewish Exhibition de 1887 sur « l'Exchequer des Juifs en Angleterre au Moyen Âge », cette conférence constituant une contribution précieuse tant à l'histoire anglaise qu'à l'histoire juive. Il a traduit en anglais « Christopher Columbus » de Kayserling, New York, 1893. Il est vice-président de l'American Jewish Historical Society, et membre du comité de publication de la Jewish Publication Society of America.
