Joseph B. Greenhut est un soldat américain né en Allemagne, engagé comme simple soldat dans le 12e régiment d'infanterie de l'Illinois à Chicago en avril 1861. Il sert dans les campagnes du Kentucky et du Tennessee sous les ordres de Grant, est grièvement blessé au bras droit à Fort Donelson, puis nommé capitaine en août 1862 et combat en Virginie, notamment à Gettysburg et à Lookout Mountain, comme adjudant-général de l'état-major de Hecker. Il démissionne le 24 février 1864 pour se consacrer au commerce, et devient l'un des trois commissaires de l'Illinois chargés des monuments du champ de bataille de Gettysburg.
