William S. Gottheil est un médecin américain né à Berlin le 5 février 1859, fils aîné du rabbin Gustav Gottheil. Diplômé de Cornell en 1879 puis docteur en médecine du College of Physicians and Surgeons de New York en 1882, il devient en 1890 professeur de pathologie au New York College of Veterinary Surgeons puis, en 1893, professeur de dermatologie à la New York School of Clinical Medicine. Auteur d'un Manual of General Histology et, en 1897, d'un ouvrage illustré sur les maladies de peau, il préside la Eastern Medical Society en 1896 et la Manhattan Dermatological Society en 1899.
