Jacob Gordin est un dramaturge et réformateur yiddish né le 1er mai 1853 à Mirgorod, dans le gouvernement de Poltava. Journaliste et écrivain russophone dès 1870, il fonde en 1879 à Elisavetgrad la secte rationaliste des Bibleitzy, rompant avec le judaïsme dogmatique, avant d'émigrer à New York en 1890, où il se fait dramaturge yiddish. Depuis sa première pièce, Siberia, jouée en 1891, il compose une soixantaine de drames et vaudevilles, dont Le Roi Lear yiddish et Mirele Efros comptent parmi ses œuvres les plus marquantes.
