Israel Gollancz est un universitaire britannique né à Londres en 1864, diplômé de l'université de Cambridge en 1887. Élu lecteur d'anglais à Cambridge en 1896, il devient en 1902 le premier secrétaire de la British Academy, dont la création doit beaucoup à son initiative, puis en 1903 professeur de littérature anglaise au King's College de Londres et président de l'Union des sociétés littéraires juives. Il a édité plusieurs textes médiévaux anglais, dont The Pearl et le Exeter Book of Anglo-Saxon Poetry.
