Ignaz Goldziher est un orientaliste hongrois né à Stuhlweissenburg le 22 juin 1850, docteur en philosophie de Leipzig en 1870. Privat-docent à l'université de Budapest en 1872, il effectue en 1873 un voyage d'étude en Syrie, en Palestine et en Égypte, où il fréquente les cours de la mosquée al-Azhar du Caire, puis devient en 1894 le premier juif admis à une chaire de cette université. Il publie notamment Der Mythos bei den Hebräern (Leipzig, 1876) et reçoit la grande médaille d'or du congrès orientaliste de Stockholm en 1889.
