Otto Goldschmidt est un pianiste et compositeur allemand né à Hambourg le 21 août 1829, formé notamment au Conservatoire de Leipzig sous la direction de Mendelssohn puis, en 1848, auprès de Chopin à Paris. Accompagnateur de la cantatrice Jenny Lind dès 1849, il l'épouse à Boston le 5 février 1852. Vice-principal de la Royal Academy of Music de Londres à partir de 1863, il fonde en 1875 le Bach Choir de Londres et compose notamment l'oratorio Ruth, donné au festival de Hereford en 1867.
