Karl Goldmark est un violoniste et compositeur hongrois né à Keszthely le 18 mai 1830, fils d'un chantre de synagogue. Formé au Conservatoire de Vienne puis violoniste au Josefstädter Theater à partir de 1850, il se consacre à la composition à partir de 1852. Son ouverture Sakuntala (1864) lui vaut une première notoriété, mais c'est son opéra La Reine de Saba, créé à l'Opéra de Vienne le 10 mars 1875 et acclamé dans les grandes salles d'Europe et d'Amérique, dont le Metropolitan Opera de New York le 2 décembre 1885, qui établit durablement sa réputation. Son second opéra, Merlin, est créé à Vienne le 19 novembre 1886.
