Jacob Goldenthal est un orientaliste autrichien né à Brody, en Galicie, le 16 avril 1815, et mort à Vienne le 28 décembre 1868, formé à l'université de Leipzig. Directeur de l'école juive de Kichinev à partir de 1843, il devient en 1849 professeur de rabbinique et de langues orientales à l'université de Vienne, poste qu'il occupe jusqu'à sa mort, tout en étant élu membre correspondant de l'Académie des sciences de Vienne. Il édite plusieurs manuscrits hébraïques médiévaux, dont des traductions d'Averroès et d'Al-Ghazali, et publie en 1854 un catalogue des manuscrits hébreux de la Bibliothèque impériale de Vienne.
