John Goldenberg est un négociant russe né aux confins de la Russie et de la Roumanie, mort en 1895. Il suit l'armée en Crimée comme cantinier avant de faire fortune en Birmanie, où il supervise d'importantes exploitations forestières pour le compte du roi. Établi ensuite quelque temps à Vienne et à Wiesbaden, il lègue par testament, rédigé en Angleterre, l'essentiel de sa fortune de 160 000 livres à six œuvres caritatives et hôpitaux de Londres.
