Écrivain allemand né à Wiesbaden le 15 décembre 1829, qui étudie l'histoire et la philosophie à l'université de Berlin de 1853 à 1856 avant de diriger, cette même année, les « Illustrirte Deutsche Monatshefte » de Westermann jusqu'en 1878, fonction qu'il reprend en 1883. Il débute en littérature avec deux drames, « Kriemhilden's Rache » (Hambourg, 1853) et « Penelope » (1854), puis publie de nombreux romans et récits, dont « Bianca Candiano » (1859) et « Savonarola » (1883), avant qu'une sélection de ses œuvres ne paraisse à Leipzig en douze volumes (1889-92).
