Born in Mantua in 1840, he studied at the Rabbinical Institute of Padua, where he was one of the last students of Samuel David Luzzatto (Shadal), and was ordained in 1868. Rabbi of Mantua (1868-1880), he was elected chief rabbi of Ferrara on November 3, 1880, a position he held until his death in 1915. He was also a historian of the Italian Jewish community and one of the first biographers of Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (Ramchal).
