Poète hébraïque et collectionneur passionné, il constitua l'une des plus importantes bibliothèques hébraïques privées du XIXᵉ s., enrichie du fonds ayant appartenu à Hayim Yosef David Azoulay (Hida). Ses trésors furent exploités par Luzzatto, Steinschneider et Zunz.
