Érudit massorète et missionnaire chrétien anglais né à Varsovie le 25 décembre 1831. Converti en 1846, il se consacre après 1863 à l'étude de la Bible hébraïque, publiant des éditions du Cantique des Cantiques (1857) et de l'Ecclésiaste (1861), puis des études massorétiques dont « Massoret ha-Massoret » d'Elias Levita (1867). Membre du comité de révision de l'Ancien Testament dès 1870, il publie trois volumes sur la Massore (1880-86) puis, en 1894, un nouveau texte critique de la Bible hébraïque, et rédige en 1871 l'exposé le plus détaillé en anglais sur la stèle de Mesha.
