Dramaturge portugais né à Lisbonne vers 1470, surnommé le Plaute ou le Shakespeare portugais et considéré comme le père de la comédie nationale. Comptant des juifs secrets parmi ses amis, il intervient en janvier 1531, alors âgé de soixante ans, lorsque des moines profitent d'un tremblement de terre à Santarém pour appeler à persécuter ceux qui hébergeaient juifs et marranes ; il convoque les religieux et les persuade de faire cesser les violences, service qu'il rapporte lui-même dans un rapport détaillé adressé au roi.
