Hébraïsant et orientaliste chrétien né à Nordhausen le 3 février 1786, mort le 23 octobre 1842. Enseignant à Heiligenstadt à partir de 1809, il devient dès l'année suivante professeur adjoint de théologie à Halle, où il exerce jusqu'à sa mort, plaçant l'exégèse de l'Ancien Testament sur des bases purement philologiques. Auteur d'un « Handwörterbuch » hébreu en deux volumes (1810-12) devenu le dictionnaire hébreu de référence, d'une « Hebräische Grammatik » parue dès 1813 et rééditée vingt-sept fois, et d'un « Thesaurus Philologico-Criticus » achevé après sa mort par E. Rödiger en 1858, il publia aussi en 1820 une traduction commentée d'Isaïe.
