Écrivain allemand né le 31 juillet 1855 à Ostrowo, en Prusse, élevé à Berlin où il étudie la philosophie et les lettres. Rédacteur littéraire au « Kleine Journal » dès 1879 puis à la « National Zeitung » à partir de 1883, il enseigne l'art dramatique au Berliner Theater à partir de 1888 puis au Hoftheater de Stuttgart en 1894, et dirige, à partir de 1901, la Deutsche Gesellschaft für Theatergeschichte. Auteur de nombreux drames et comédies, dont « Die Leute von Hohenselchow » (1884), il publie aussi une étude critique sur Alphonse Daudet et une édition annotée d'une pièce médiévale (1886).
