Nicknamed the "Jewish Caruso," born in Podolia (region of Haisyn, present-day Ukraine) of a cantor father. After Odessa and eight years in Vilna, he became in 1907 cantor of the great synagogue on Tłomackie Street in Warsaw. A tenor with a spectacular range, he made the first phonographic recordings of Jewish liturgical music as early as 1903 and sang as far as Carnegie Hall. He perished with his family in the Warsaw Ghetto in 1943.
