Rabbin français né à Metz en 960, mort à Mayence en 1040, fondateur des études talmudiques en France et en Allemagne. Établi à Mayence, où il forma de nombreux élèves venus de tous pays, il convoqua vers l'an 1000 un synode interdisant la polygamie. Auteur reconnu en exégèse biblique et en massore, il révisa le texte de la Mishna et du Talmud et composa des séliḥot inspirées par les persécutions de son temps ; à la mort de son fils, apostat depuis l'expulsion des juifs de Mayence en 1012, il n'en observa pas moins le deuil selon le rite juif.
