Soviet engineer of Jewish origin, creator of TRIZ (theory of inventive problem solving) from 1946 onward; first president of the TRIZ association. He published his first book, « How to Learn to Invent », in 1961, and wrote science fiction under the name Altov. Imprisoned in the Vorkuta Gulag (1950–1954) after a letter criticizing Stalin.
