Ingénieur soviétique d'origine juive, créateur de la TRIZ (théorie de résolution inventive des problèmes) à partir de 1946 ; premier président de l'association TRIZ. Il publia son premier livre, « Comment apprendre à inventer », en 1961, et écrivit de la science-fiction sous le nom d'Altov. Emprisonné au Goulag de Vorkuta (1950–1954) après une lettre critique à Staline.
