Philologue allemand né à Francfort-sur-le-Main le 21 mai 1829, mort dans cette ville le 29 août 1870, fils de Solomon Michael Geiger, frère aîné d'Abraham Geiger. Formé à l'hébreu dès l'enfance puis à la philologie classique à Marburg, Heidelberg et Bonn, il s'établit à Francfort en 1851 et publie en 1865 son premier ouvrage, avant d'entreprendre dès 1852 son œuvre majeure, « Ursprung und Entwickelung der Menschlichen Sprache und Vernunft » (Stuttgart, 1868), qui applique le premier la théorie de l'évolution au langage. Il meurt avant de l'achever ; son frère Alfred Geiger en publie le second volume en 1872.
