Marin juif d'origine allemande du XVe siècle, né à Posen selon son propre récit, contraint de quitter le pays en 1456 en raison des persécutions ; il gagne Jérusalem puis Alexandrie avant de voyager jusqu'en Inde, où il est capturé et vendu comme esclave. En 1498, alors au service du vice-roi de Goa, il rejoint la flotte de retour de Vasco de Gama, qui le fait baptiser sous son propre nom et l'emploie comme pilote ; devenu favori du roi Emmanuel à Lisbonne, il accompagne ensuite Cabral en 1502 lors de son expédition vers l'Orient.
