Juriste hambourgeois diplômé de Heidelberg, à qui l'exercice du droit fut d'abord refusé faute de droits civiques comme juif. Devint le principal avocat de l'émancipation des juifs d'Allemagne. Vice-président du Parlement de Francfort (Paulskirche) en 1848 ; premier juif nommé juge en Allemagne (1860). Fondateur de la revue Der Jude (Altona, 1832-1833).
